Acne is a condition that is manifested in the skin. This condition is not actually deadly or fatal but can lead to disfigurement of the face due to scars and blemishes if the case is extreme. There are several types of acne and the causes may be the same or different for each type. The most common type of acne is the one called acne vulgaris. This type of skin condition is usually found in adolescents on the verge of puberty although there are cases of individuals who carry it well into adulthood.

Factors That Contribute To Acne Genetic structure is one thing that can dictate whether the individual is prone to acne or not. Those with high occurrence of family members with acne are more likely susceptible to the skin condition than others. The hormonal swings of puberty and menstruation are also factors that contribute to acne. Acne treatment for the different kinds of acne will depend on what causes the acne outbreaks.

Scars And Blemishes

Many individuals suffer from deep gouges and scars due to the occurrence of recurrent acne in their facial skin and other parts of the chest and back. Acne treatment is necessary to reduce the possibility of scars and marks that can mar the skin in the future. Since acne is a temporary occurrence for many individuals, acne treatment is a great preventive measure for blemished skin when acne goes away.

The best acne treatment can be hormonal pills or topical applications that will control the inflammation of the skin. The presence of the bacteria that is often the cause of recurring acne can also be eliminated by using topical antibiotics and other substances that can kill them. Practicing good hygiene is also another acne treatment that may work for those with not so severe cases of acne.

Effective acne treatment is a great tool for building self confidence and self esteem for the individual. The individuals who suffer from severe and recurring acne often suffer from being self conscious about their condition and the blemishes that come with it. Early and preventive acne treatment can help to reduce the possibility of the individual being meek and shy.

What is Hematology?

Hematology is the medical specialty that involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood. Doctors of Hematology treat various blood diseases ranging from anemia, blood clotting disorders or other disorders of the blood or blood-forming organs. In fact, a hematologist will often diagnose and treat cancers of the blood, such as leukemia and lymphoma. Hematology is separate from but overlapping with the subspecialty of medical oncology. This is why hematology and oncology are mentioned together. Doctors of Hematology and Oncology have completed a specialized residency program after finishing medical school and a residency in internal medicine.

How hematology and primary care doctors differ

Beyond ordering a hematology panel and perhaps reading hematology results, your general doctor will not practice much hematology. While your primary care physician is excellent for most illnesses that you are likely to encounter, he will likely refer you to a hematologist if your hematology results are abnormal. Because doctors of hematology complete extensive additional training, they are the premier hematology specialists. In central Florida, many of the hematology referrals that are made come to the specialists at Premier Hematology & Oncology.

Why you might need a doctor of hematology?

Most often, your doctor will be the one to make a referral to a hematologist for a full or specialized hematology panel and workup. Some patients visit a hematologist directly, however. Patients that have been previously been diagnosed with anemia, blood clotting disorders or other disorders of the blood or blood-forming organs may want to contact a hematologist directly for treatment and follow up. These diseases can be challenging to and treat, a premier hematology provider can offer answers where others have failed.

If you need a hematologist

Before your hematology appointment, it is helpful to understand your hematology results so that you can have an informed discussion. For example, RBC stands for red blood cells, which are the cells that carry oxygen. If this value is low, it could indicate anemia. WBC, on the other hand, stands for white blood cells. White blood cells are the immune system cells that attack infections in the body. This number goes up in infection, but abnormalities could mean a number of different things. The third component of a hematology panel (CBC) is platelet number. Platelets help the blood form clots. If platelets are too low, it could mean that the blood will not clot as effectively.

Dr. Redan: A Highly Accomplished Name in Laparoscopic Surgery

Less pain, no large incision scar, reduced hospital stay, and extremely short period of recovery are all benefits offered by modern laparoscopic surgical techniques. However, having a highly skilled surgeon is just as important as the surgical techniques in order to fully exploit the potentials of laparoscopy. Dr. Jay A. Redan, director of minimally invasive surgery at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, is known as one of the best laparoscopic surgeon in the United States. The majority of Dr. Redan’s patients recover without pain, scarring, or complications due to his outstanding skills in laparoscopic surgical techniques.

Dr. Redan and his team at Florida Hospital Celebration Health conduct laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeries by inserting a scope through a very small incision, or no incision at all Dr. Redan and his team use advanced endoluminal and laparoscopic techniques that are usually not available in general medical practices. Due to non-availability of these state-of-the-art facilities and services closer to home, a large number of patients travel to Central Florida from around the world to come to Florida Hospital Celebration Health. Dr. Redan conducts many surgeries including colo-rectal, hiatal hernia many others abdominal and thoracic procedures. At Celebration Health’s Center for Complex Abdominal and Pelvic Pain Syndrome, Dr. Redan uses his laparoscopic surgical skills to treat these patients and results are often exceptionally positive.

His dedication to laparoscopic surgery is not only beneficial to humans but animals as well. Dr. Redan recently performed laparoscopic surgery on an antelope at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom with great success.

McCarus Technique: Outstanding laparoscopic technique for Hysterectomy by Dr. McCarus

The laparoscopic technique of removal of the uterus or “hysterectomy” is gaining more and more popularity as a minimal invasive technique. Traditional or open surgical techniques carry many disadvantages including: large painful abdominal incision, scar, longer hospital stay and recovery period (approx 6-8 weeks).

Dr. Steve McCarus, board-certified gynecologist with specialty in laparoscopic gynecological surgery and director of the Center for Pelvic health at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, has received enormous attention for his contributions in the development of the minimally invasive laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Before the development of the “McCarus Technique,” patients had to stay in the hospital for longer periods of time, followed by a recovery period of at least six weeks. Using Ultrasonic harmonic energy to perform hysterectomies via a tiny hole in the belly, the McCarus Technique offers early discharge from the hospital, averaging one day in most patients, followed by a shorter recovery period of only two weeks.

Dr. McCarus took the task of improving already existing techniques by gathering data and simplifying the method to show a proven outcome. After refining the instrumentation and collecting data, in 2006, he was able to develop a refined technique.  He is now educating patients and physicians on the benefits of his well improved minimally invasive technique. He is also working with insurance companies and wants more and more people to know that this type of surgery is available to them, and to convince surgeons to become adept at performing it.

With ever increasing popularity of the “McCarus Technique”, physicians from all over the globe are coming to Central Florida to learn this state-of-the-art technique from him at the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement at Florida Hospital Celebration Hospital. The American Society for Women’s Health, founded by McCarus himself, and Florida Hospital Celebration Health has a Gynecologic Pelvic Surgery Fellowship Program which offers training to postgraduate residents.

Dr. McCarus is also well known for treating disorders such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids and incontinence, and offers infertility evaluations and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) consultations.

Florida Hospital Neuro-Oncology Center

When it comes to brain cancer, it takes a village—a village of specialized physicians, that is. Brain cancer is a complex problem and brain cancer treatments are rarely provided by just one doctor. Not only does it take many physicians and surgeons working as a single oncology team, but each of these individuals should be specially trained to treat every unique group of people.

One model of how neuro-oncology should be practiced can be found at the Florida Hospital Neuro-Oncology Center. The oncology group at Florida Hospital employs a staff of leading physicians specifically trained to provide effective brain cancer treatments, and in many cases, brain cancer cures. Their oncology group has experts in medical oncology and radiation oncology. The experts in medical oncology provide chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and other medical brain cancer treatments. Likewise, specialists in radiation oncology deliver internal and external radiation treatment when appropriate.

Another part of a neuro-oncology team is the surgeon. Florida Hospital Neuro-Oncology Center has dedicated neurosurgeons on staff remove solid brain tumors. They use the latest surgical, and minimally invasive procedures to provide the best chance of experiencing brain cancer cures. Not only do all of these medical and surgical professionals work in the same hospital, they work as a multidisciplinary team to provide their patients with the best possible brain cancer treatments.

Stop Smoking Programs in Central Florida

October 17, 2015 by

Nicotine addiction is a reality for tens of thousands of people in our country and in the world. Stop smoking programs are abundant and are there to assist the smoker to quit successfully in a reasonable amount of time, and offer support and advice when it gets tough. It is easy to start but not easy to stop smoking. Many smokers stop more than once before they are finally able to quit for good. They try different stop smoking programs until they find one that works for them. It also depends greatly on how long the person has been smoking and how motivated they are to quit. Some people may find themselves diagnosed with a chronic or deadly illness, like emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or even lung cancer. This should motivate people to quit immediately ‘cold turkey’ but sometimes it just isn’t enough. Smoking is so highly addictive that people choose to feed their nicotine addiction before they address their medical issues.

There are quite a few stop smoking programs available to those who want to stop smoking. A health care professional should be consulted first for advice regarding which stop smoking program, or combination thereof, would be most beneficial. If a smoker has enough motivation and support from family and friends to do it on his or her own, then nicotine gum, patches, or pills could be tried first.

Many people choose to join stop smoking programs such as Nicotine Anonymous, which is based on the traditional 12-step philosophy. There is also private and group counseling available to people who need more intensive support. A number of online stop smoking program options are also available consisting of therapy and support forums, herbal supplements, pills, and other potions. Be sure to research these stop smoking programs well before you expend any funds on something that just isn’t going to work for you.

These days technology is always coming out with new and extraordinary things, hence the quit smoking laser treatment. You should ask your family doctor about it now. You can easily head into the office for a quit smoking laser treatment and virtually curb that nicotine craving for weeks, or even months.

Whatever stop smoking program you choose is only as effective as your desire to quit. Without motivation to change your habits and lifestyle, your efforts will be for nothing. Plan a stop smoking program ahead of time. Pick a date to quit and get your support system in place. Plan how you are going to deal with temptation in social settings and times of stress, since this is probably when you have the greatest desire to smoke. A stop smoking program can be very successful if it is planned and adhered to by the person who wants to quit. Mind over matter, right? Next time go for a brisk walk or call a friend instead of lighting up, your lungs will thank you. Good Luck!!
