McCarus Technique: Outstanding laparoscopic technique for Hysterectomy by Dr. McCarus

The laparoscopic technique of removal of the uterus or “hysterectomy” is gaining more and more popularity as a minimal invasive technique. Traditional or open surgical techniques carry many disadvantages including: large painful abdominal incision, scar, longer hospital stay and recovery period (approx 6-8 weeks).

Dr. Steve McCarus, board-certified gynecologist with specialty in laparoscopic gynecological surgery and director of the Center for Pelvic health at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, has received enormous attention for his contributions in the development of the minimally invasive laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Before the development of the “McCarus Technique,” patients had to stay in the hospital for longer periods of time, followed by a recovery period of at least six weeks. Using Ultrasonic harmonic energy to perform hysterectomies via a tiny hole in the belly, the McCarus Technique offers early discharge from the hospital, averaging one day in most patients, followed by a shorter recovery period of only two weeks.

Dr. McCarus took the task of improving already existing techniques by gathering data and simplifying the method to show a proven outcome. After refining the instrumentation and collecting data, in 2006, he was able to develop a refined technique.  He is now educating patients and physicians on the benefits of his well improved minimally invasive technique. He is also working with insurance companies and wants more and more people to know that this type of surgery is available to them, and to convince surgeons to become adept at performing it.

With ever increasing popularity of the “McCarus Technique”, physicians from all over the globe are coming to Central Florida to learn this state-of-the-art technique from him at the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement at Florida Hospital Celebration Hospital. The American Society for Women’s Health, founded by McCarus himself, and Florida Hospital Celebration Health has a Gynecologic Pelvic Surgery Fellowship Program which offers training to postgraduate residents.

Dr. McCarus is also well known for treating disorders such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids and incontinence, and offers infertility evaluations and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) consultations.

There are many natural ways to lower blood pressure, because there are many natural ways to improve fitness and maintain a healthy lifestyle, which is related to keeping blood pressure low. So naturally, a lot of the same things that make you healthy will lower your blood pressure as well.

If you decide to take the natural route, natural ways to lower blood pressure include monitoring your weight, exercise and food intake. Being overweight correlates with high blood pressure, so staying at optimal weight is good for your arterial walls. Optimal weight is achieved through healthy diet and exercise, so go for a run or hit the gym for at least 30 minutes for most of the days of the week.

In terms of what you eat, there are many things you can consume to keep blood pressure levels down, and there are things you should avoid that promote artery clogging. Substances that can help lower blood pressure are fiber, oats, Omega-3, Vitamins C and E, calcium, zinc, potassium and magnesium. In addition to food, these substances are also available in the form of pill supplements.

Things you should avoid consuming are the usual suspects: sugar, saturated and trans fats, tobacco and alcohol. It’s a good idea to stay away from drinking sodas and eating junk food, as well as smoking cigarettes and drinking alcoholic beverages. It’s okay to eat and drink these things once in a while, but excessive consumption has unhealthy consequences.

Florida Hospital Neuro-Oncology Center

When it comes to brain cancer, it takes a village—a village of specialized physicians, that is. Brain cancer is a complex problem and brain cancer treatments are rarely provided by just one doctor. Not only does it take many physicians and surgeons working as a single oncology team, but each of these individuals should be specially trained to treat every unique group of people.

One model of how neuro-oncology should be practiced can be found at the Florida Hospital Neuro-Oncology Center. The oncology group at Florida Hospital employs a staff of leading physicians specifically trained to provide effective brain cancer treatments, and in many cases, brain cancer cures. Their oncology group has experts in medical oncology and radiation oncology. The experts in medical oncology provide chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and other medical brain cancer treatments. Likewise, specialists in radiation oncology deliver internal and external radiation treatment when appropriate.

Another part of a neuro-oncology team is the surgeon. Florida Hospital Neuro-Oncology Center has dedicated neurosurgeons on staff remove solid brain tumors. They use the latest surgical, and minimally invasive procedures to provide the best chance of experiencing brain cancer cures. Not only do all of these medical and surgical professionals work in the same hospital, they work as a multidisciplinary team to provide their patients with the best possible brain cancer treatments.

Stop Smoking Programs in Central Florida

July 18, 2015 by

Nicotine addiction is a reality for tens of thousands of people in our country and in the world. Stop smoking programs are abundant and are there to assist the smoker to quit successfully in a reasonable amount of time, and offer support and advice when it gets tough. It is easy to start but not easy to stop smoking. Many smokers stop more than once before they are finally able to quit for good. They try different stop smoking programs until they find one that works for them. It also depends greatly on how long the person has been smoking and how motivated they are to quit. Some people may find themselves diagnosed with a chronic or deadly illness, like emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or even lung cancer. This should motivate people to quit immediately ‘cold turkey’ but sometimes it just isn’t enough. Smoking is so highly addictive that people choose to feed their nicotine addiction before they address their medical issues.

There are quite a few stop smoking programs available to those who want to stop smoking. A health care professional should be consulted first for advice regarding which stop smoking program, or combination thereof, would be most beneficial. If a smoker has enough motivation and support from family and friends to do it on his or her own, then nicotine gum, patches, or pills could be tried first.

Many people choose to join stop smoking programs such as Nicotine Anonymous, which is based on the traditional 12-step philosophy. There is also private and group counseling available to people who need more intensive support. A number of online stop smoking program options are also available consisting of therapy and support forums, herbal supplements, pills, and other potions. Be sure to research these stop smoking programs well before you expend any funds on something that just isn’t going to work for you.

These days technology is always coming out with new and extraordinary things, hence the quit smoking laser treatment. You should ask your family doctor about it now. You can easily head into the office for a quit smoking laser treatment and virtually curb that nicotine craving for weeks, or even months.

Whatever stop smoking program you choose is only as effective as your desire to quit. Without motivation to change your habits and lifestyle, your efforts will be for nothing. Plan a stop smoking program ahead of time. Pick a date to quit and get your support system in place. Plan how you are going to deal with temptation in social settings and times of stress, since this is probably when you have the greatest desire to smoke. A stop smoking program can be very successful if it is planned and adhered to by the person who wants to quit. Mind over matter, right? Next time go for a brisk walk or call a friend instead of lighting up, your lungs will thank you. Good Luck!!

Pediatric Hematology & Bone Marrow Transplant

Pediatric Hematology & Bone Marrow Transplant

We often take our blood for granted. When we develop a disorder of the blood like cancer, however, we begin to appreciate how important the blood really is. When blood cancer strikes a child, as it does too often, effective treatment becomes the singular focus. Fortunately doctors of pediatric hematology and the children’s oncology group are experts in fighting these diseases.

Blood disorders usually start in the bone marrow, which is the soft tissue in the center of the long bones of the body. Bone marrow is the place where blood cells are born but also the place where cancers of the blood come from as well. Many diseases of the blood can be cured with a procedure called a bone marrow transplant. While, cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma are particularly suited for treatment with a bone marrow transplant, non-cancerous blood diseases like sickle cell anemia and congenital neutropenia (low white blood cells) can be treated with the procedure, too.

In a bone marrow transplant, a doctor of oncology or of pediatric hematology infuses drugs into the bloodstream which target and kill the cancer and disease causing cells. Virtually all of the bone marrow is killed at the same time. Since people must have bone marrow in order to live a normal life, this is where the “transplant” of a bone marrow transplant comes into play.

In an allogenic bone marrow transplant (for humans, allogenic means tissue or cells that come from another human), bone marrow that people have generously donated is purified and made ready for transplant. The children’s oncology physician or nurse infuses the donor bone marrow into the bloodstream of the patient. The marrow cells make their way to the bones and begin to make new, healthy blood cells.

While allogenic bone marrow transplant and autologous bone marrow transplant are performed routinely, it is still a specialized treatment and not available at every hospital. If your child needs this lifesaving treatment, you will be referred to one of a number of bone marrow transplant hospitals. In central Florida, the Florida Hospital for Children is the home of expert oncology and pediatric hematology physicians. Their children’s oncology group specializes in the treatment of blood diseases and cancer, but also in the care of children. After all, each patient is a person and when it comes to pediatric hematology, each person is a child.

NCSA Gets Stimulus Money – Florida Hospital

florida hospital robotic surgery.

Located in Celebration, Florida, the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement (NCSA) was recently awarded $4.2 million by the federal government as part of the 2009 federal stimulus program. The project was one of two earmarks requested by Congressman Allan Grayson that would have directly affected Celebration. The House Appropriations Committee rejected the other, $750,000 requested to upgrade the planned Celebration library.

The Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement, located at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, develops and disseminates cutting edge surgical knowledge and techniques through state-of-the-art teleconferencing technology. Participants perform minimally invasive surgical procedures at one of nine state-of-the-art endoscopically equipped stations, mastering invasive surgical skills.

The money will pay for the training of doctors and the development of robotic surgery techniques. The money will create dozens of new high-paying jobs. A primary goal of the project is to save the lives of U.S. troops in the field. The directed spending (earmark) will come from the Department of Defense and is the largest single award in the 8th Congressional District for 2010.

Doctors will eventually be able to use the technology to perform life-saving operations on troops in the field, long before they can get to a hospital, performed remotely by surgeons that might be located anywhere in the world. The funding will lead to the direct creation of at least 50 high-tech jobs over a five-year period here. The workers will make an average of $55,000 a year.

The award will help establish a new “Global Center of Excellence in Medical Robotics and Simulation,” which will be housed at the NCSA.

“It is our vision to expand the reach of the Nicholson Center and this grant will help us make this goal a reality,” said Lars Houmann, president and CEO of Florida Hospital. “The support of the local community and lawmakers has provided us with assistance that allows Orlando to continue on its path of becoming a medical destination.”

“It is so important that physicians have access to a training facility that advances the understanding of robotic and simulation technologies,” said Dr. Monica Reed, administrator of Florida Hospital Celebration Health. “Florida Hospital Celebration Health is so fortunate to house this outstanding facility where physicians from all over the world will have the opportunity to further improve their skills in robotic surgery.”

In a press conference following the announcement of the award, Congressman Grayson admitted that the award was an earmark that apparently did not have to pass much Congressional scrutiny, but defended it on the basis of 1) earmarks are such a relatively small percentage of congressional spending, 2) because it represented defense department spending that would ordinarily go to traditional defense contractors located outside the district, and 3) because it will be used to save lives of combat soldiers in the field.

Finding Good Medical Advice Online

lady at computer

When it comes to looking up information on the Internet, you never know what you are going to get. You may be smart enough to know the difference, but some have not been online that much or for very long, and they just assume what they read in medical advice online is always right and accurate. That does not make them stupid by any means; it just means they are not yet web savvy enough to realize that things are not always correct. It really does depend on the source of the information and where you look to find it.

There are times when you do not want to think about getting medical advice online. This is when you have not been to a doctor in years and you are going through something that could really be serious. You could always look up your symptoms, but you do not want to self diagnose in this case. In fact, self-diagnosis is never a good idea anyway. You can look for medical advice online for reference, but you should leave the final diagnosis to a qualified medical professional. Your health and your life could be at stake.

You may find some tricks and tips when searching for medical advice online. What you have to do is to think about what you are reading. Does it make any sense? Is there any way that this may be unsafe for you? What you should realize is that you can not go out and take natural supplements if you are on prescriptions. There could be deadly interactions of which you would never know. You can always try what you find through medical advice online, but always talk it over with your doctor first to be sure it is safe.

You may be asking yourself, “So, what are you saying?  That I have to go to the doctor for every cough, pain, or cramp?”  Not at all.  Just know that not all sites are created equal.  Many doctors in the Central Florida and Orlando area now have websites.  The majority of these websites are directly affiliated with a practicing medical doctor and are fed general medical information and various categories of FAQ’s for your convenience.

Find a local Central Florida doctor in your area, whether it be in Orlando, Lakeland, or Winter Haven, there are plenty of quality medical professional with competent, complete helpful websites.
