Space Shuttle Atlantis rolls out of the Vehicle Assembly Building about midnight in late April for its 3 mile, 1 mph journey atop a crawler transporter vehicle to the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center. The transporter weighs 5 million pounds, and its load is another 12 million pounds. Given that weight, the fuel economy isn’t too bad at 42 feet per gallon of diesel fuel.
