Hosting A Block Party

We live in a busy world running our children around, working, cleaning. Although we may live in well-populated neighborhoods, it is possible to live on the same street for years on end and scarcely meet your neighbors. Hosting a block party is the best way to break the ice.

At block parties, neighbors set up tables on the street and usually have refreshments and music. In front of many of their homes, owners set up small grills and cook up burgers and hotdogs. The party may have special events if it was planned well. There may be clowns, bands, pony rides, or raffles.

These Can Be a Messy Business

The downside of block parties is that they tend to leave a mess behind. Soda cans, napkins, paper plates, balloons, streamers, and other discarded items can line your clean lawn following the festivities. So remember, when you organize the party, organize a clean-up crew for the end. Although it is usually agreed that homeowners are responsible for tidying their own property, the clean-up crew picks up any remaining debris that made it way onto the common area, including the streets and sidewalk.

There may be Restrictions.

If you live on an urbanized street that is open to local traffic, you will need to get permission from your local authority. You may need to purchase a permit for the occasion. The neighbors may offer to share the costs. Local police departments may also be of help. They might barricade the street for you.

If you live on a street with homeowners’ association, you may need to check with them. They may have strict rules that are more trouble than they are worth. This might be a good idea to raise at the next board meeting.

Even if you don’t have this problem, it’s a good idea to get a consensus from neighbors. You may want to reconsider if more than half are unwilling to participate. In the event that they don’t agree, just downsize to someone’s back yard. If several families in a row are into the idea, make it a multi family party and invite everyone.

Remember, parties are fun, so lighten up and share a cold one with the neighbor. You may find, by the end of the day that the two of you have more in common than the fact that you own property on the same street. You may even make a new friend.
