Historic May 14 Launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis

Shuttle Atlantis transport

On May 14, Central Florida residents and visitors will have a chance to view the historic last launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis from the Kennedy Space Center.  Atlantis is one of three remaining shuttle orbiters, each of which is scheduled to have its final flight between now and the end of the year.  The mission designation for the flight is STS-132 (which stands for Space Transfer System mission #132).

Atlantis’ 12-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS) will deliver a 23-foot long, 17,000 pound Russian-built research module that will provide additional storage space and a new docking port. The module will be permanently attached toone of the existing sections of the ISS and will carry important hardware on its exterior including a radiator, airlock and a European-built robotic arm.  Three spacewalks are planned to install spare components outside the station, including six spare batteries, a Ku-band antenna and spare parts for the Space Station’s Canadian-built robotic arm.

This and the other final flights of Discovery on September 16 and Endeavor no earlier than mid-November will be the last opportunity to transport large components and spare parts to the ISS, which can only be delivered using the large cargo bay provided by the Shuttle.

This will be the 32nd flight for Atlantis, which lifted off on its maiden voyage on Oct. 3, 1985.   Later missionsincluded the launch of the Magellan probe to Venus in May 1989,Galileo interplanetary probe to Jupiter in October 1989, the first shuttledocking to the Mir Space Station in June1995 and the final Hubble servicingmission  in May 2009.

Atlantis is named after a two-masted sailingship that was operated for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute from 1930to 1966.

In total Atlantis has logged 115 million miles of space flight has spent 282 days in earth orbit.

The scheduled launch time is 2:20 pm, given favorable weather conditions at the Kennedy Space Center and at its downrange emergency landing sites in case one is needed.

For those who wish to be as close as possible for the launch, prime viewing sites are along the Indian River on U.S. Highway 1 especially in Titusville, the Beachline Expressway Rt. 528 where it crosses over the Indian River, in Cocoa Beach off Route A1A, and at Jetty Park at Port Canaveral.  Plan to arrive at least 3-4 hours prior to launch.

Keyboards for your laptop or computer have really been keeping up with the present day technologies. If your old enough to recall the first computer keyboard that came on the market you have to remember that these were just like a typewriter keyboard. Not surprisingly as technological know-how improved, keyboards also started to be simpler to use. After that of course the advent of the wireless keyboard hit the market and people went crazy for them. And now comes the newest technology and of course a brand new keyboard that goes together with it. And in the following paragraphs we will be taking a look at that technology inside the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard.

Solar power has been powering our calculators for a long time and it was just a matter of time before somebody placed this technology into our computer keyboards. This is the reason we are looking at Logitech’s new keyboard, simply because it is a solar powered product. The best element about this keyboard is that there are no wires, no batteries to keep changing and you also will not need a usb power cable in order to recharge the batteries in the unit. This is a full solar keyboard which can charge itself from any kind of light source, even a simple desk lamp.

The device itself is extremely attractive and is only 1/3 of an inch thick. So if you are one of the people who have to bring it with you, the size of the unit will make it very portable. The receiver is so tiny that lots of persons just plug this into a usb port on their laptop and leave it there. It also uses 2. 4 GHz, so this means no more delays or dropouts when you are making use of the unit. You may also use the very same receiver to acquire a compatible wireless mouse. So for those of you who work with a laptop or have a computer with restricted usb ports you will not find yourself using more ports to add a mouse.

You will find that the performance of this keyboard is also a thing really worth mentioning. They’ve taken the actual technology of a laptop keyboard and the comfort of a traditional keyboard and put them with each other in this unit. That means you’ll be able to move the keyboard where ever you want but still have the computer keyboard feel more like your laptops keyboard. Being comfortable is just a further advantage of this keyboard, and once you utilize it you will know what I mean.

You also won’t need to worry about paying out a fortune on this keyboard as you can purchase this through Amazon for 41% off. And that 41% off will mean that you can pick this unit up for under $50. And you will not have to concern yourself with additional costs as Amazon will ship this item to you for free. So if you are searching for a new computer keyboard, or you are tired of changing the batteries within your current wireless computer keyboard, you will find that the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750, could be the exact thing you have been searching for.

The economic depression

When the truce to resolve World War 1 was signed, nations prepared for the next war.  Fighter planes were re-built to become deadlier.  It was made to fly higher, and farther more agile in combat.  The planes were equipped with gun turrets, bombsights, air-cooled engines, cantilevered wings, retractable landing gear, and all new metal construction.  When World War II was declared, the planes were ready. And with the US becoming a part of the war, every “first of its kind” airplane was already used for combat. The economic depression that the world experienced in the 1920s made the military spending during peacetime look excessive.World War I drove aviation and pilots for improvement in flying skills and technology both for civil and military.  This gave the military room to develop technology for war without being noticed.  The spitfire fighter was developed from a civilian racing plane, seeing its potential for war.  In 1938 for instance a Seversky pursuit plane manned by a civilian won the Bendix Race.  The military saw its abilities and immediately ordered same type of planes eventually developed into Republic P-47 Thunderbolt the most preferred plane for war.  Acquiring technology from civilian gave the military operational and logistical experience.
Middle of 1920s, Germans started rearmament.  Lufthansa, their leading airline, was nationalized to train pilots and set the aviation industry in motion.  Transformation of Luftwaffe was the highest priority since the Nazi party came to power in 1930.All the nations started assembling their own air fleets the arms race has begun.  Everyone learned from the first war the value of superior air power.  This means better airplanes, top of the line, can be repaired easily and can be mass-produced.   The focus was on development of fighters and bombers. In the middle of the 1930s came all-metal monoplanes.  British had two, Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire. Machineguns installed in the wings enable the Hurricane constant firing.  It had a Rolls Royce Merlin engine.  Eight machineguns were installed on the Spitfire, It can fly as fast as 355 mph, and good handle at high altitudes. The deadly Messerschmitt Me.109 can fly at speeds up to 342 mph.  It can do fierce dives and quick climbs.  This is Germany’s response to the Spitfire.  It has the smallest possible airframe equipped with a Mercedes-Benz liquid–cooled engine.
Bombers were built with capacity for long distance travel and to carry heavy bomb loads.  The technology of revolving gun turrets eliminated the need for having several guns because it can cover for the range of several.  These bombers are equipped with multiple engines. The Japanese has long-range bomber escort called Mitsubishi A6M Reisen Zero.  It had great maneuverability at fast speeds and high ceiling.  There is no protective armor for pilots because of the heavy weight. The Boeing B-17 was developed in 1935.  It has four engines; it has a capacity of 17,600 pounds of bombs, and 12 guns.  The Boeing B-17 was planned to be the strategic bomber during the Second World War.Hugh Trenchard of the British Royal Air Force built several bombers such as the Avro Lancaster, the Wellington, the Stirling, and the Halifax.  The fighter plane for the Italians was the S.M.79 a trimotor.By the time we had reached the year 1939, Military aviation took a big leap in technology with use of faster metal monoplanes. Germany and England is developing the jet engine.

Dementia: What your CNA should Know

The numbers are staggering . For every 15 Americans (age 71 and older), two of them have been diagnosed with dementia. And, worldwide , at least 35 million people live with dementia. This number is expected to increase to 65.7 million in 2030 and 115.4 million in 2050! With theese statistics , it is more important than ever for nursing assistants to be armed with information about dementia.

These are some of the basics you can share with your CNA :

What is Dementia ?

When you hear the word “dementia”, you probably think of Alzheimer’s disease. And, it’s true. Alzheimer’s disease is Edione of the forms of dementia. However, there are many other forms of dementia.

So what is dementia ? It is a slow, progressive loss of mental functions, including: memory, thinking, judgment and the ability to learn. Dementia is not considered a disease by itself. Rather, it is a syndrome-or group of symptoms- which are caused by various diseases. The dementia symptons are often severe enough to keep people from performing normal daily activities .

In the United States, an estimated 5 million people have dementia . The risk of dementia increases with age and most people affected by dementia are over the age of 65 . Does it mean that everyone over the age of 65 will get it ? Absolutely not ! An interesting fact: more that half of all people over age 100 do not have dementia.

It’s true that the brain undergoes changes as people get older . But these normal age-related changes, such as a decrease in both short-term memory and the ability to learn, do not affect a person’s ability to function. Dementia does.

What are the causes of Dementia ?

There are multiple causes of dementia, including:

  • Diseases that affect the nerve cells in the brain, such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Pick’s disease.
  • Vascular disorders such as a stroke.
  • Toxic reactions from excessive alcohol or drug use.
  • Brain tumors.
  • A lack of specific nutrients in the diet, such as vitamin B12 and folate.
  • Infections that affect the brain and spinal cord.
  • Head Injuris and Traumas .
  • Radiation therapy to the head.
  • Cardiac arrest.
  • Chronic kidney deceases , liver or lungs.

If Your Client Has Dementia…

Focus on strengths! Most cases of dementia inevitably cause decline of a person’s memory, intellect and personality- which becomes evident in the middle to late stages of the disease. in the early stages of dementia, it is especially important to focus on the person’s remaining strengths…and not on what he or she is losing. For example, Mr. Smith has trouble remembering what he hears, but does quite well with visual cues. So, his aide put simple written instructions and pictures on the walls of Mr. Smith’s living area.

Stimulate, don’t overwhelm. it is important to keep in mind the fine line between stimulating people and overwhelming them . Learn each clients limits and be mindful of them . For example, Mr. Green may become agitated by all the sights and sounds after a ten minute walk, but Mrs. Hall is perfectly content to observe her neighbours for over an hour.

Last in, first out! For most people with dementia, the things they learned most recently are the most easily forgotten.  Allow your clients to focus on what they do remember.

Childlike, not childish. Clients with moderate to severe dementia may lose the ability to care for themselves. Like little children , they need help with eating, dressing, walking and toileting . But, remember , just because some of their needs and behaviors may be childlike, they are not children. Be sure to treat them as adults; don’t patronize or “talk down” to them.

Personality Plus! Typically, dementia tends to exaggerate personality traits that already existed In some cases dementia exhagerates personality traits  that are already present. For example, someone who was bossy in his younger years may be completely domineering due to dementia. Or, dementia may make a person who was always tidy become obsessed with neatness.

Ten Warning Signs of Dementia

Keep these ten warning signs in mind as you go through your work day-especially if you care for a number of elderly clients . Don’t hesitate to report to your supervisor if you see your clients developing these signs . Your observations may help them receive an early diagnosis-and treatment- for dementia.

  • Loss of Memory
  • Problems performing everyday jobs
  • Difficulty with language
  • Confusion about time and place
  • Poor or impaired judgment
  • Problems with abstract thinking
  • Misplacing items
  • Noticable changes in behaviour or mood
  • Changes in personality
  • A loss of initiative

Keep in mind that depression, side effects of medication and alcohol abuse are among the problems that can mimic dementia.
